My Story: Jamala Kimya
The Kitty Box™ was born from more than a vision — it was born from truth, lived experience, and a deep remembering of the women in my lineage whose wellness stories often went unheard.
In 2003, my mother passed away after a short and devastating battle with ovarian cancer. Losing her changed the way I viewed womanhood, wellness, and the silence that often surrounds our reproductive health. Even then, I didn’t yet understand how deeply that loss would shape my own journey.
My body began telling a story that the medical world wasn’t prepared to listen to. For ten years, I lived with an undiagnosed condition called adenomyosis. It brought extreme pain, uncontrollable bleeding, exhaustion, and a constant fear that something was wrong. My periods lasted 7–14 days, sometimes longer. It took over my life, my energy, and my sense of safety.
Instead of being heard, I was met with dismissal.
“You’re fine.”
“It’s just a heavy period.”
“We don’t see anything concerning.”
Medication after medication, birth control to "control" the bleeding was offered as a temporary bandage, while the root cause was ignored. Because I didn’t have fibroids or cysts — the “usual” — my pain was minimized and my symptoms were brushed aside.
In 2014, my iron levels had reached a dangerously low number from years of heavy bleeding, and I required a blood transfusion just to function. By then, I was passing clots the size of golf balls, living in cycles of pain and fear, and still being told everything looked “normal.” But my body was screaming the truth long before anyone else acknowledged it.
By 2016, after a decade of suffering, I underwent a hysterectomy. Only after the surgery — when my pathology report returned — did I learn that I had been in stage I endometrial cancer. The diagnosis wasn’t caught before. It wasn’t suspected. It was found only once my uterus was finally removed. That moment changed everything for me.
And here’s the part that is rarely spoken aloud in gynecological care: Many conventional feminine hygiene products contain chemicals, synthetic materials, and fragrances that can irritate sensitive tissue or disrupt the delicate balance of our reproductive system. Black and Brown women, in particular, are exposed to these products at higher rates — and the long-term effects of that exposure are not being thoroughly studied or openly discussed.
Most women aren’t told that a pap smear screens only for cervical cancer.
It does not detect ovarian cancer.
It does not detect uterine or endometrial cancer.
It does not detect the dozens of other gynecological cancers that exist.
And for many of these cancers, there are no reliable early detection tests at all. This silence leaves countless women believing they are “fine” as long as their pap smear is normal — when the truth is far more complex. Combined with medical dismissal and racial disparities in healthcare, this creates a dangerous gap in the wellness of Black and Brown women.
The Kitty Box™ is my answer to that silence.
It is a reclamation.
A devotion.
A promise.
Every product, blend, ritual, and offering is crafted to honor the complexity of our bodies and the wisdom of our lineage. It is my commitment to create feminine care that is pure, culturally aligned, transparent, and rooted in truth — so no woman feels unheard, unseen, or unprotected the way I once did.
My story is not just mine. It is the story of countless women whose wellness has been minimized, whose bodies have been misunderstood, and whose pain has been dismissed.
The Kitty Box™ is my response to that silence — a sacred reclamation of care, truth, and wellness for Black and Brown women.
Every product, blend, ritual, and offering is crafted with intention, transparency, and cultural alignment, honoring both the complexity of our bodies and the wisdom carried through our lineage. It is my commitment to ensure that no woman feels unheard, dismissed, or left fighting alone the way I once did.
My story is not just mine.
It echoes the experiences of countless women whose pain was minimized, whose symptoms were overlooked, and whose voices were softened in medical spaces that should have protected them.
The Kitty Box™ is for us — for our healing, our empowerment, and our return to a wellness that honors who we are.
It is for the women who came before us, the ones walking beside us, and the generations who will follow.
It is for every woman reclaiming her body, her truth, and her birthright to holistic feminine care.
This is our reminder that we deserve care that listens, honors, and truly sees us.
And here, you always will be.
